What causes fading?
Fading is caused by a combination of UV rays, visible light, heat, humidity, and other factors. The pie chart below shows that UV rays contribute mostly to fading; however heat and visible light are also strong contributing factors

Rayban films contain UV inhibitors that filter out over 98% of harmful UV rays to help reduce fading.
Why is the type of glass important when choosing a solar film?
Thermal stress is a major topic in the window film industry. Adding a film that is not suitable for a type of glass in some situations may cause the glass to break.
Rayban will conduct a free glazing assessment at the time of the quote to analyse which type of glass you have and recommend the best film. We pride ourselves on providing the correct advice to save you money and give you the best results.
What are the different types of glass?
(Residential and Commercial)
Clear Glass or Float Glass
Sometimes referred to as annealed, plate or sheet glass. Used widely in both home and commercial buildings as approved for under Australian Standard 1288 – 1989.
Laminated Glass
Two or more sheets of glass bonded together by means of a plastic interlayer. Laminated glass is used as a safety/ security glazing in doors and areas adjacent to doors.
Factory tinted glass
A colouring is added to clear float glass at the manufacturing stage, and can be made in four main colours – Grey / Bronze / Green/ Blue. This glass is fitted to architectural designed buildings and up-market homes.
Tempered Glass
This is used in high traffic areas such as glass doors and foyer areas of commercial buildings. When it breaks it smashes into small particles, and is sometimes referred to as safety glass because of this feature. Tempered glass is widely used on motor vehicles, passenger trains and boats.
Reflective Coated Glass
Colours, coatings and constructions can be tailored to suit a specific project. The higher manufacturing costs of this glass mean it is usually found on commercial buildings and upmarket homes.
Decorative Glass
Usually referred to as patterned or rolled plate glass, this may have a rough surface to one or both sides. Films may be installed on the smooth side which in some cases would involve turning the glass around or installing an external film.
Will window tinting affect the growth of indoor plants?
According to landscape horticulturalist Robert E. Moon, the lack of ultraviolet rays does not in any way affect the natural growth of either desert or tropical plants. Light rays that plants need for natural growth are far reds, red and blues which are not part of the ultraviolet spectrum.
Variegated plants (light green plants) however, require more light than plants that are darker green. Films with higher light transmission can be selected for these plant types.
What is Australian Standard 2208?
AS 2208 is a standard test performed on glass by creating impact on the glass using a 46kg bag to simulate human impact. Homes, childcare or day care centres, or where children may come into contact with glass should comply with AS 2208. The fracture of glass when broken is to minimise the likelihood of injuries.
Rayban offers a range of films that comply with AS 2208.
How do I get Privacy? What about at night?
Many of the solar films will give privacy during the day, so that you can look out of your windows enjoying your view without anyone being able to see inside. Unfortunately this effect will disappear at night when the light changes to being darker outside than inside. Curtains and blinds can be drawn shut at night to give you privacy.
For situations that require total privacy, we have various opaque films in various colours however there is restricted view through both sides of these films. Many of the privacy films also allow light into the room and are well suited to bathrooms and office partitioning.
How can tinting make my home more comfortable?
Window films filter out varying amounts of heat, light, UV rays, and can increase the visual appeal of your home. The benefits of tinting include:
• Reduced energy usage and increased comfort
• Fade protection for furniture and carpets
• Reduced eye strain and better light control
• Increased privacy and security in the home and office
• Reduced likelihood of injury when glass breakage occurs
• Increased protection from opportunistic thieves
• Enhance the look of the glass
Ask Graham which films will best suit your situation.
Are window films applied on the inside or the outside of the window?
Most window films are applied on the inside of the window and are therefore not exposed to weather elements. In some cases it may be necessary to apply an external film.
Testimonials
8 years ago i had my whole house tinted, at first i was worried that the amount of light had decreased too much but after 2 - 3 days it was fine. Because i prefer to have all my blinds open during the day it cut out the glare from outside (also gives you privacy from nosey neigbours) and made my home look cool in summer and warm in winter. Now i have moved and again have had my home windows tinted. I found that John and his staff were still the same - just as friendly and efficient as before. Friends are now getting their windows done and will also be recommending John and the team at Rayban. .... more
